This was my first commissioned painting, I believe that I charged 40$ for it.
Susanne,
her parents, and I were spending a lovely weekend in this B&B in
Maine, when they saw that I was painting watercolor landscapes, they
asked me to paint their farmhouse.

The two paintins
below sold a The Reading Art Association in 1981. El Mercadito,
unfortunately a bit out of focus, was from a Photo I took during
Susannes and my vacation in Brazil.

Bens Place (1985) |
Shortly after attending a
workshop by Charles Reid, the famous American portrait artist, in Sebasco Bay,
Maine, I was driving in the backwoods of Vermont. On the side of a road was and
old decrepit house with an open porch. On the porch there was a man sitting on
an even older sofa. One leg of the sofa had been replaced by a brick. I walked
over to the man and asked if I could take his photo, which I did before he
could respond. From that photo I created
“Bens Place” (a fictitious name).
The painting was inspired
by Charles Reid’s very loose “painterly” style.
"Bens Place" won me a first place
price at the 1985 Andover, Massachusetts Art in the park exhibit, and later the
Brackman Award (best portrait in show) at the Mystic, Connecticut art
exhibition (1985) , and also a “blue Ribbon” at the Reading Art Association art
exhibition (1985).
